Research Interests

Drew Talley is the Research Coordinator for the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, in charge of coordinating, conducting, and overseeing research performed on our component sites. Drew received his B.Sc. in Biology from San Diego State University, and his PhD in Biological Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, CA. His research generally focuses on the complex ways in which distinct and often distant habitats are interconnected, either through the activities of animals or through physical processes such as wind and water movement. His PhD research focused on salt marshes in southern and Baja California, where he examined the functional linkages between habitats created by small resident wetland fishes, as well as tracked the progress of a created marsh in providing habitat for native species. He went on to a job as a post-doctoral researcher with a joint-appointment at the University of South Florida and UC Davis, where he still holds an appointment as an associate ecologist. He has studied habitat linkages among a range of coastal habitats throughout coastal California and Mexico. The intact habitats extending from subtidal to upland regions within the San Francisco Bay NERR's reserve sites are ideal research sites for Dr. Talley's work on cross-habitat connectivity.

In addition to his research, Drew has provided outreach to local citizen groups and schools in the U.S. and Mexico, and has assisted the Mexican government and NGOs in environmental impact studies and developing management plans for their threatened ecosystems. Drew is actively involved with the outstanding science education program Aquatic Adventures (www.aquaticadventures.org).
