Masters of Science degree

San Francisco State University students have been studying marine science at the Romberg Tiburon Center since it was first established in 1978. With its close proximity to salt marshes, rocky intertidal areas, sandy beaches and open water, the Center is a perfect setting for active field study. State of the art research facilities are available for graduate student research, as well as a fleet of research vessels that are suitable for research activities in the Bay.

RTC faculty members are deeply committed to education, and offer hands on research experiences in their laboratories and in the field.  Each student receives personalized attention from their RTC advisor/mentor.

Although graduate work at RTC can be undertaken through any department at SFSU that offers a Master of Science or Master of Arts degree, most degrees are granted through the Departments of Biology, Geography and Human Environmental Studies, and Geosciences, with the following concentrations:

  • M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Marine Biology
  • M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Ecology and Systematic Biology
  • M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Physiology and Behavioral Biology
  • M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Conservation Biology
  • M.S. in Applied Geosciences with an emphasis in Physical Oceanography
  • M.S. in Applied Geosciences with an emphasis in Marine Geology
