  • How can networks of marine protected areas help make fishing more sustainable?

Results from the Marine Protected Areas fishing game showed that under high fishing pressure, a place with ‘no-take’ MPAs (marine reserves) results in better fishing (in the areas outside the MPA) and more fish coming into the market overall, than a place with no MPAs. Under low fishing pressure, MPAs reduced the total catch of fish available to bring to market. MPAs helped keep more fish in the sea under all levels of fishing. In contrast,  areas with no MPAs had much smaller fish populations overall, but especially under high fishing pressure. These areas with no MPAs also brought fewer fish to market, overall.
